For the past few years, I had been collecting photos of Christmas trees I’ve seen. It was a combination of something I do (that is, taking pictures of things around me) and of the things that are symbolic to a place or a time of the year.
It is easier to take pictures of Christmas trees (as opposed to other things like Gingerbread Man) as they are one of the more common decorations that businesses will set up. Here are some of my favourites:
Tree of Teddy Bears at Fullerton Hotel, Singapore
It was not a real tree, but it was a tree of cuddly cuteness! Unlike many other trees made of plushies before it, the tree at Fullerton Hotel did not have them teddy bears lined up in layers. They were random, some hiding behind the others, not all having the same expressions, actions and things to hold (look at that teddy with a snowman in his arms!).
It was a shame that Xiong Xiong was not there to take part in the fun!
Tree with Tree Men, Changi Airport
This decoration set up all over Singapore Changi Airport is mainly made up of a modest tree flanked by 2 “Snowman” that were made up of 2 slices of cross-section logs. I didn’t inspect them to see if those were made of real wood, but the idea was there: Promoting an ideology of sustainability by avoiding excessive plastic and metal objects!
Though, I thought the idea of making a snowman out of a dead tree and placing them beside a (supposedly) real tree is somewhat like coating a chicken drumstick with battered eggs before frying lol
SilverKris Tree at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport
This tree from SilverKris Lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand is in the running, simply because that marked the first time I was at SilverKris Lounge as a passenger!
Golden Spoon Tree at Bangkok
This tree at Karmakamet Diner was representative of its location: being in a restaurant!
The golden spoons formed a glittering cone that hung from the ceiling against the dark background of entrance to the diner’s, which gave it a magical, levitating effect.
Four Points by Sheraton at Bangkok
The tree adorning the hotel lobby of Four Points by Sheraton at Bangkok may looked modest from this picture, but it was a staggering 2 stories tall!
The Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
Speaking of giant trees, the one I found at The Renaissance Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was technically 2 stories high, since the lobby was 2 stories tall, but the actual height was about 4 stories! It was really difficult to try to get the whole tree in the frame despite the fact that the camera had wide angle lens!
To me, this tree had the right mix of glitter and green!
Village Tree at Centrepoint, Singapore
When I posted this picture on Instagram, I noted that this year, most of the Christmas trees found in Singapore were either on its own, or if it had accompanying background decorations, those tend to be 2D. Take the Christmas tree decorations at Marina Bay Link Mall for example, where the tree stood in front of a European street scene that were made of 2D boards.
This tree at Centrepoint’s basement, greeting shoppers as they enter the premises from Somerset MRT station, was accompanied by 2 modest mock up of European cottages. The contrast of green against the warmth of the wooden houses made this a comforting sight to behold!
