Hello, Raincouver!

It has been raining for 3 days in Vancouver.

When I first arrived at Vancouver, Canada in early August, the sun was always shining. There was rain, yes, but they were short-lived and barely came once a week. In fact, I got a tan from running my errands out in the sun!

Enter September and the rain became more frequent. By the 2nd week, the sky was overcast most days of the week.

Then last week, it rained for 3 days in a row, with more to come according to the forecast.

My kakis and I decided to take a walk around Lonsdale Quay during one of the rainy evenings. The rain had brought the traffic to a standstill, so North Vancouver downtown became the most convenient dinner spot for us. Due to the rain, the sky darkened more than an hour earlier than we were used to. However, we got a good view of downtown Vancouver, glistening under the rolling clouds.

Thankfully, it was a drizzle. The lights shone like diamonds across Vancouver Harbour, through the light veil that hung over the city.

The wind chill did not dampen the spirits of 3 grown men looking for simple adventure in a city none of us had experience of before we took the plane in.

We took plenty of photos, but I found the one below most suited for the occasion.

This is a filler post, yes. But it’s also a milestone post.

According to my landlord, we are officially out of summer and into the 9-month season of Raincouver. He told me to get accustomed to the constant rain, a feature of the city that gave Vancouver its Raincouver nickname.

With rain, the night time temperature has also started to drop. I used to get “warmed up” in the day. Now, I need to turn on the heater at night to beat the cold.

This is a facet of city life a Singaporean like me needs getting used to in Canada. Goodbye all-year summer. Hello cold and sun-less days! Yes, believe it or not, this is what I came 10,000 miles for!
